Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins

I love it when the kids introduce me to books I've never heard of. Such is the case with Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, author of the Underland Chronicles series. It's not the most original premise--a futuristic distopian society where people are kept in poverty and entertained by kill-or-be-killed reality television shows--but the characters and plot pacing make this one a big hit with kids. In this case, the government randomly selects a boy and a girl from each of twelve districts to play in a televised game of blood sport. When Katniss's younger sister's name is drawn, Katniss volunteers to go in her place. A blend of adventure, moral dilemma, romance, and girl power will give this book broad appeal.
